Terms are considered "like terms" if the have the same variable with the same exponent. Constants or numbers are "like terms" since they do not have a variable. 3y + 10x + 4 + 2x - y + 3 can be simplified by combining like terms to 2y + 12x + 7.

Be careful when combining like terms to keep the sign/operation that is in front of the term. This is especially true when there is a subtraction sign.
