Lesson 14: Boxplots and Outliers

30 Minutes

Mrs. Ashlee Deduijtsche

Instructions:

In the previous lessons we discussed finding the measures of center and spread. We will use that information to construct a boxplot.

The five-number summary is a set of descriptive statistics that provide information about the distribution of the data set. In consists of:
Minimum - the lowest value
Q1 - (1st quartile) the median of the lower half of the data
Median - the overall median of the data set.
Q3 - (3rd quartile) the median of the upper half of the data.
Maximum - the highest value.

Outliers are data points that are extreme values that differ from other data points, and they can distort statistical results.

Use the teacher slides to go through the notes handout and then complete the practice problems.
